The Best Time to Visit Ha Long Bay
There is universal agreement that the best time to visit Ha Long Bay is during the northern hemisphere autumn (September and October) or spring (March and April), but especially from March to May. At this time of year, it is neither too hot nor too cold, with the temperature usually in the mid-20s and perfect for sightseeing and other activities.
Those travellers on a tight budget can take advantage of the low season (between May and September) when day trips and cruises are offered at a discount, sometimes as much as 40%. Bear in that between July and August, storms are likely - and sometimes typhoons - which can result in the Vietnamese government declaring Ha Long Bay unsafe for travel, and your trip or cruise will therefore be cancelled. Fortunately, storms rarely last more than 3 or 4 days, and there are destinations worth visiting in the meantime like Ninh Binh, which is often called Ha Long Bay on land.
If you are unable to visit Ha Long Bay during spring or autumn, and have no option but to travel during summer or winter, the Bay can still be enjoyed. If it’s hot, you can take advantage of the weather by indulging in water activities like swimming, kayaking and fishing. If you are travelling in cooler weather and there is misty rain and grey skies, Ha Long Bay will appear stunningly mysterious.
While there are definitely peak and off seasons, with the right attitude, Ha Long Bay can be enjoyed at any time of the year.
